The Fostering Panel monitors the range and kind of foster carers available to the local authority in comparison with the needs of kids, and plays a key role in the upgrading of standards within the fostering service.
As part of this function, the Panel oversees the conduct of assessments and yearly reviews of permitted foster carers, advises on any relevant matters in relation to the Fostering Service and makes suggestions to Children's Services about quality issues and performance standards.

In specific, the Panel makes references as to the following:

The suitability of applicants to act as foster carers and terms of their endorsement (with Connected Persons)

Exemptions from the limit to the number of kids placed with foster carers

The continual suitability of the foster carers and whether the terms of the agreement remain appropriate (after the first yearly review of foster carers and any other review where important changes or termination of agreement is recommended)

Any other particular matters relevant to a foster carer which the Chair of the Panel considers suitable to be referred

What is short term fostering?

Short term fostering is for kids and young individuals who need to be looked after in impermanent foster care. It’s the most communal type of foster care. Short term foster placements give foster parents the break to support a child and really make a difference during a time of massive change in a young person’s life.

Throughout a short-term fostering placement, a supervising social worker will typically be working alongside local authorities to plan for the long term future of the child. In some cases, staying with the short term foster carer and making the home a more permanent procedure may be the outcome, if all parties approve that this is the finest thing for the child.
